The modern Greek Argonauts are the Diaspora, following the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts to retrieve the Golden Fleece from remote Colchis. By Steve BakalisIn antiquity, many Greeks migrated to new Hellenistic cities founded in Alexander the Great’s wake. The power of these cities was based on the spirit of Alexander’s Oath at Opis, as it was based on their ability to be connected more by language, culture, and history than by law or a hierarchical relationship. Homonoia, the pursuit of order and unity, which had been a growing preoccupation among the Greeks for some time, is the central…

The staunchly secular Republican People’s Party (CHP) has been riven by divisions since Kemal Kilicdaroglu lost a bitterly fought May runoff against Turkey’s dominant but divisive president. At the party’s annual congress, delegates voted to replace Kilicdaroglu with the relatively unknown Ozgur Ozel after squandering what many viewed as the opposition’s best chance to end two decades of Erdogan’s Islamic conservative rule. ANKARA, Oct 26 (Reuters) – Turkey’s health minister said on Thursday that he had urged the World Health Organization to guarantee the provision of medical services to Gazans hit by the Israel-Hamas war, and that its efforts so far were insufficient. When Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, side by side with his Greek counterpart, announced on Tuesday that Turkey had entered a new and positive era with Greece, there was disbelief among many in Athens. “Already?” George, a retired ship captain in his 60s, snorted. “I don’t remember how many times we heard the same things.” Being neighbours and historic nemeses for the past century, Turkey and Greece have had occasional shouting matches, near-conflict incidents, and times of cooperation over the decades. Yet relations between the countries came very close to a possible hot war in 2020, when Turkish and Greek warships collided…
